Discover the myriad contributions that all immigrants have made as they come to join family or start their own lives in a new country they call home. Arriving with their hopes, dreams, and determination, generations of immigrants have made the fabric of this country diverse, vivid, and welcoming. This lyrical and unifying picture book, from Newbery Honoree Margarita Engle and award-winning illustrator Raúl Colón, celebrates the thousands of immigrants who built America and carries a message of hope that there will be “light for all” in the future.

Invitation to Imagine

TeachingBooks asks each author or illustrator on our Virtual Book Tour to share a writing prompt, a drawing exercise, or just an interesting question to spark curiosity and creativity. Enjoy the following activity contributed by Margarita Engle.

Imagination Activity with Margarita Engle

Look at the label of a piece of your clothing. Is it made in the U.S.? Look at a piece of fruit that has a sticker. Is it grown in the U.S.? Find one that is from another country. Imagine the lives of the people who helped you have clothes and food. Write a poem of gratitude.

Finish This Sentence . . . with Margarita Engle

As part of our Virtual Book Tour, TeachingBooks asks authors and illustrators to complete short sentence prompts. Enjoy Margarita Engle’s response.

I hope that readers will learn about the world and think about peace when they read my books.
