Laurie Halse Anderson, the author of Speak (FSG, 1991), got in touch with us recently. Currently, Speak—a National Book Award Finalist as well as a Printz Honor Book—is being challenged.
Connecting these events to this week’s Banned Books Week, Laurie writes, “The recent book banning attempt in Missouri creates a wonderful opportunity for students to work through the issues and speak for themselves about their First Amendment Rights.”
To support educators in teaching about the right to read, the U.S. Constitution, and specifically Speak, we’re providing the following multimedia resources:
Hear Laurie Halse Anderson introduce and read from Speak.
Use these lesson plans for Speak and gain insights from interviews conducted with the author herself.
These Intellectual Freedom Resources can be used throughout the year.
