Poetry Friday: Poems about place

While browsing TeachingBooks.net for audio Book Readings featuring poetry, I came across this dramatic audio performance of two poems from Curtis Crisler’s Tough Boy Sonatas (Front Street, 2007), a collection of 38 poems reflecting the experiences of boys growing up in Gary, Indiana.

Listen now

A favorite excerpt from “A Gary Poem”:

Cracked sidewalks embroidered with weeds—
Wild children, green, crab grass citizens,
Poking up from reconstruction, rebuilding,
The suture-splitting revelation
That the sweet, snug grip about Gary’s neck
Is the tight hand of corporation

Share this powerful clip with students as a jumping-off point for writing their own poems about their city and surroundings.

Poetry Friday is hosted at The Blog with the Shockingly Clever Title this week.
