While browsing TeachingBooks.net for audio Book Readings featuring poetry, I came across this dramatic audio performance of two poems from Curtis Crisler’s Tough Boy Sonatas (Front Street, 2007), a collection of 38 poems reflecting the experiences of boys growing up in Gary, Indiana.
A favorite excerpt from “A Gary Poem”:
Cracked sidewalks embroidered with weeds—
Wild children, green, crab grass citizens,
Poking up from reconstruction, rebuilding,
The suture-splitting revelation
That the sweet, snug grip about Gary’s neck
Is the tight hand of corporation
