I happen to share my day of birth with a very tragic shipwreck. During the early hours on April 15th, 1912 the RMS Titanic sank into icy waters.
I recently spoke with Don Brown, author of the nonfiction book All Stations! Distress!: April 15th, 1912: The Day the Titanic Sank (Roaring Brook Press, 2008). I remarked on how tragic this day must have been for so many. Don agreed, but he also pointed out that he saw heroism and adventure in this historic event.
These “conditions of humanity” are what interested Don in writing nonfiction books.
The anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic is drawing near. Share this Book Reading by Don Brown with students to pique their interest in this particular event in history. Listen and discover how 23 tons of animal fat, soap, and oil tie in to this particular piece of history.
