Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is one of my favorite holidays. I get to celebrate a human being who facilitated some amazing social movement in his lifetime.
Thankfully, those of us who work with young people can use the award-winning book Martin’s Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (written by Doreen Rappaport and illustrated by Bryan Collier) to introduce King’s message of peace and love. By creating this book, Doreen and Bryan have given us insight into the story behind the person.
In a similar way, we can use the Original Author Program with Bryan Collier to get insight into the story behind the book.
- Watch Bryan share his view that painting and creativity is about living — that art is an expression of how we act in and see the world.
- Learn about how Bryan makes collages out of a variety of items, including maps and images of ties.
- Understand the ways in which making Martin’s Big Words was a labor of love for Bryan.
Here’s wishing you an MLK Day that allows for digging deeper — whether it be into the story of a life, or into the story of a book.

Hi Carin,
My daughter and I have a tradition of reading Martin’s Big Words every MLK day, and I love seeing how each year she comes to understand more and more about his message and his life.
I’m enjoying the TeachingBooks blog. Keep up the good work!
