African American stories
The reason there is so much history, especially African American history, in so many of the books I write is because I am African American, and it’s a part of me like my blood. – Jacqueline Woodson, author of 2006 Newbery Honor Book, Show Way
Although teachers use books by African American authors and illustrators throughout the entire school year, sometimes educators are particularly interested in highlighting African American book creators during Black History Month.
To assist you, here is a collection of original TeachingBooks.net Author Programs (videos, slide shows, and written interviews) that will allow you and your students to “meet” some outstanding African American authors and illustrators:
- Ashley Bryan
- Bryan Collier
- Christopher Paul Curtis
- Leo Dillon
- Sharon Draper
- Eloise Greenfield
- Nikki Grimes
- Angela Johnson
- Patricia McKissack
- Toni Morrison
- Christopher Myers
- Walter Dean Myers
- Kadir Nelson
- Marilyn Nelson
- Jerry Pinkney
- Jacqueline Woodson
Also, explore the Coretta Scott Book Award Curriculum Resource Center and enjoy 200+ Meet-the-Author Book Readings!
In much the same way that Black history extends way beyond the month of February, we know that the positive impact of meeting African American book creators is felt within African American communities, and beyond.
Let us know about the connections you and your students make with these award-winners!

This resource is especially appreciated as I see Black History slowly and discreetly disappearing from public schools.

Toot, toot!
Thought I’d add a couple of other titles that I think would be of interest to teachers, librarians and students. The following contemporary biographies of celebrated African American authors are based on live interviews and include black /white and color photographs of them as children and as they are now.
Patricia and Fredrick McKissack, Authors Kids Love
by Michelle Parker-Rock. Enslow Publishers, Inc. 2009
Christopher Paul Curtis, An Author Kids Love
by Michelle Parker-Rock. Enslow Publishers, Inc. Spring 2009.
Hope you enjoy them.
